AI and the Competitive Advantage
The new architecture of growth, differentiation and market leadership, built through machine intelligence and exceptional human judgement.
Most organisations can now answer whether AI has made them faster. Very few can answer whether it has made them better. In my doctoral research across six thousand executive leaders, eighty-two per cent reported that AI had made decisions quicker. Only fifty-four per cent believed those decisions were better. That gap is where competitive advantage is now won and lost.
This keynote sets out what actually separates the organisations pulling ahead from the ones generating activity. The dividing line is rarely the technology, which is increasingly the same technology for everyone. It is how well a leadership team can tell a genuine advantage from an expensive experiment, and how quickly it can move capital, talent and attention behind the first while stopping the second.
Dr Kate Barker draws on three decades advising governments, sovereign entities and global enterprises to show where machine intelligence compounds returns, where it quietly erodes them, and how the strongest leadership teams build the judgement to know which is happening. The argument is commercial throughout: growth, differentiation, margin and market position, not adoption for its own sake.
Especially suited to chief executives, boards, strategy leaders and executive teams at growth summits, investor events, annual leadership conferences and sector mainstages.
What the room leaves with
-
A clear test for distinguishing measurable AI value from expensive activity.
-
The three places machine intelligence reliably compounds commercial returns, and the two where it erodes them.
-
A shared language for the leadership team to challenge an AI business case.
-
The decisions that need to move from the technology function to the board.
Kate knows how to challenge a senior audience. She brings strong evidence, commercial judgement and a clear understanding of the business questions behind the technology. The keynote was sharp, provocative and highly engaging, but never provocative for effect. She challenged assumptions that deserved to be challenged and gave the room a much more rigorous way to think about what comes next.
